Event Details
Riyadh is getting ready to host the 16th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP16). It will take place in the centre of the Arab environmental capital for 2024 and 2025, from December 2 to December 13.
The UNCCD conference, the largest global gathering to tackle drought, land degradation, and desertification, will convene representatives from 197 nations, international organisations, and environmental experts. Notably, the Kingdom's hosting of a global environmental event, guided by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's vision, demonstrates its commitment to addressing environmental issues at national, regional, and international levels. Additionally, the Kingdom, the first Middle East and North African country to host the conference aims to provide innovative solutions to combat desertification, climate change, and mismanagement of natural resources, which could lead to water scarcity affecting three out of four people by 2050. Moreover, Saudi Arabia aims to restore 1.5 billion hectares of degraded lands by 2030 through initiatives like “Green Saudi Arabia” and “Green Middle East,” impacting over 3 billion people globally. Besides, the UNCCD conference this year features a green area for showcasing innovations and practical solutions, allowing youth, entrepreneurs, and sectors to participate, marking a qualitative shift in the methodology of UN conferences. The conference aims to promote $1 trillion worth of land reclamation initiatives, promoting environmental and economic returns of $7 to $30 per dollar invested. Furthermore, the UNCCD conference aims to engage youth in achieving global land reclamation commitments, empowering them to transform their communities and build a sustainable future, as land degradation affects one billion young people in developing countries. Ultimately, the Kingdom hosts a global event aligning with Saudi Vision 2030's environmental sustainability focus. The conference promotes global partnerships, innovative plans, and decisive action towards land reclamation and desertification, fostering a greener, more sustainable future.
