Event Details
The Saudi Green Initiative SGI 2025, on March 27, seeks to include the entire Saudi society in the Kingdom's sustainability policy, which intends to achieve zero emissions by 2060 under Vision 2030.
The initiative entails efforts that increase residents' quality of life while ensuring a secure and civilised future for future generations. In 2016, the King Salman Renewable Energy Initiative emerged, followed by the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI), which aims to reduce carbon emissions, increase vegetation cover, and establish natural reserves. The public and private sectors participated in the launch of more than 80 programs totalling over 200 billion dollars. The Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) originated on March 27, 2021, to highlight the Kingdom's commitment to combating climate change, pollution, declining green spaces, and a lack of interest in marine environment protection. In addition, the Royal Reserves Council in Saudi Arabia was established to promote environmental sustainability and reform, aligning with Vision 2030. The council aims to protect natural life, including vegetation and wildlife, and promote ecotourism within a supportive framework. It ensures the prosperity, reproduction, and growth of these ecosystems while facilitating information flow, promotion, and field visits. The Council has been working on reducing illegal hunting, overgrazing, and cutting trees to protect rare animal and bird species, reduce vegetation decline, and prohibit firewood harvesting, while also considering tree cutting as illegal and preventing it entirely. The Reserves Council aims to increase vegetation and organise entry and exit to natural reserves. Projects include transforming the Kingdom into the world's largest hydrogen producer and focusing on green activities within the Green Transformation and Green Middle East Initiative. Ultimately, these initiatives encompass carbon capture, fuel and chemical production, and the use of renewable energy sources like solar and wind.
